Congress 2024

Congress 24
Eight days of bridge – every morning and every afternoon. Thank goodness the evenings were free of bridge as we were ready for bed by 8.30pm. That is 450 boards, 48 hours and a variety of Pairs, Swiss Pairs and Teams - WOW You don’t have to play everything nor do you have to play every day – some people go for an event or a day or three but Joy and I decided to go all in! It’s not all bridge, there’s the companionship of sharing a house and eating together at home or in the local cafes and restaurants. New friends from all over the country and even overseas. Fancy dress, a quiz night, seminars and evenings at the pub or walks on the beach – if you had the energy! It’s not cheap: my eight days probably cost slightly less than $1,000 including expensive entry fees, accommodation, petrol and meals. Luckily Joy had access to a Mt Maunganui house through a friend of the family - without that the eight days could easily have cost $1,500. But if you love the game think ahead to 2025. Congress is in Palmerston North in early November – might you be there? You definitely need a partner and travelling as a team of 4 has advantages. Think about it – it’s a wonderful experience. Whether you win or lose you'll come home the richer. Results: Jena and Joy came 6th in Restricted Open Pairs and 6th in the Restricted Open Teams Nita & Sabrina were 3rd in the Intermediate Swiss Pairs ( a great achievement) and they were 10th in the Intermediate Pairs and along with Ted and Lorraine were 8th in the Intermediate teams. Not bad for a small club. Well done to all 5 players.
